A Great Classic

Most people dislike classic books (except for me, of course). Most people think that they're long, boring, and lets face it, not up-to-date (duh). However, I feel that some classics are very engaging. For example, I just recently finished Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens. It was pretty good, but a little long. All in all, it was an exciting story, with much action and mystery. I do suggest that if you want to completely understand it, you read a whole dictionary (Charles Dickens has a giant vocabulary). To all those who believe that my taste is old-fashioned (Megan and Ella, for example) well, who says that old-fashioned can't be good? Trust me, they made MUCH better music in the 60's than now!

The Adventures of the Big Wee Hag

If you wake up in the morning to see your sheep being carried off backwards by a bunch of little blue men, you know about the life of Tiffany Aching. The day Tiffany learns that she's a witch, her brother gets stolen, and her prime suspect is the Queen of the Elves. She must go into her magical realm, defeat dream-creating monsters, and rescue her brother, with the help of a gang of drunk, violent, 6-inch-high thieves (that only she seems to be able to control). Not your typical Saturday.

This book is alarmingly funny and very engaging! It's my favorite book. It's good for all ages!

Faux Cat Sayings

I let the cat out of the bag!

Yeah, right! Cats are extremely independent. They will do whatever they want. Also, cats love to play in bags. It's practically a pastime for them. If the cat is in the bag, it will not get out of the bag. It may be referring to the whole new pet thing, but seriously. That guy who wrote it should have known more about cats. Unless you turn the bag upside-down and shake it, (which will result with very painful scratches) a cat will never willingly come out of a bag.

Curiosity killed the cat!

How morbid! They're telling kids not to ask questions by telling them threatening stories! Anyway, cats are usually only killed by car accidents, and I'm sure they're not wondering about what makes the engine run. It's also bad for the people who you tell that to. How would you like to be told that cats die from curiosity after you ask a harmless question? What does this dude have against cats anyway?

Did the cat get your tongue?

The closest I've ever gotten to a cat ripping my tongue out was when a cat scratched my cheek (long story). Cats have a kind but independent nature, and would never rip someones mouth apart. The more correct way to say it would be "Did the rabid polar bear get your tongue?" It's more likely that a harmless kitten tearing your tongue out. Once again, a so-called "wise" saying is putting cats in a bad light.

The Adventures of Ember

We may take it for granted, but we're surrounded in light. What if everything was dark? What if all you had were the street lights? And, what if, by chance, there is almost no more electricity? Ooooh, suspenseful! That's what the Ember trilogy explores. Lina is a girl living in a dying underground city, facing the prospect of a power out - forever. The question is, will the chewed-up instructions show the way out of the collapsing city? And will she and her friend Doon be able to save it before it's too late?

Free Rice

This is a great site. You play games, like vocabulary, or multiplication, and the site donates 20 grains of rice to a person each time you answer correctly. I spent half an hour on it! It's fun!

Emily Windsnap's Wonderful Tail

OK, I know that we're all getting to old for princess fairy tales with wicked witches, charming princes, and talking animals. But, there are some exceptions now and then. I'm not expecting you to go through your 3-year-old cousin's book shelf in search of a Disney Princess Fairytale Collection. That's DEFINITELY going too far. But, some books have fantasy creatures, and are still for our age. One of them is The Tail of Emily Windsnap. The first thing you realize about this book is the tittle. No, the book isn't called The Tale of Emily Windsnap, it's The Tail of Emily Windsnap. Obviously, this story contains a tail of sorts. The next thing you realize is the cover. A mermaid tail and part of a mermaid sparkles in the dark, deep ocean-blue background. I guess assumption #1 was correct. If these notions were going through your head as you glance at the azure and purple underwater scene on the cover, then you essentially have this story down. This book is about twelve year old Emily Windsnap, who has never touched water in her life (strangely enough, because she lives on a boat). Finally, she convinces her mother to let her take swimming lessons. While she swims in her first class, she realizes something strange happens hen she gets in the water. Something strange... yet, wonderful. But she worries that if the secret gets out, she'll be made into an exhibit at some science lab. As she ventures to find more about her strange ability, she unravels a strange mystery involving her missing father, a strange man named Mr. Beeston, a ferocious leader, and an unfair law. If your hands are itching to open that book, you're probably going to like this mysterious tale. Even if it doesn't sound very interesting to you, if you like daydreaming, is a preteen girl and has a vivid imagination, you'd probably like it. If you do read it, I hope you enjoy it!

Restaurant Reviews

The Parkway Deli
I've been to many good restaurants, but if you wanted to know about a restaurant that is casual but serves good food, I would suggest the Parkway Deli. This deli serves all types of sandwiches, and other great meals. The have lots of kosher food, for people who are Jewish, and really good appetizers. If you go there, I suggest getting their macaroni and cheese, or their chicken and cheese panini. Also they have a delicious pickle bar, which is one of my favorite parts of the restaurant. For an appetizer, you should try their sweet potatoes, or their mashed potatoes. If you like leafy green veggies, or is just an adventurous eater, you should definitely try their spinach. I love it. For dessert, they have lots of different kinds of cookies, and you should probably get one of those. I hope you have a chance to go to this fantastic deli.

The Lightning Theif

As soon you start to read this book, the first thing you notice is the chapter titles. They're really funny! One is called "I battle my jerk relative", and another from the next book is called "The party ponies invade". This book is about a boy named Percy who found out he's a half blood (someone who has one ancient greek god parent, and another normal parent). Percy has to go to camp Half-Blood. There, he finds out that Zeus's master lightning bolt was just stolen, and he thinks Percy did it. In a quest with his two friends, Grover and Annabeth, he goes to find the lightning bolt and the person who stole it.

Blister

As soon as I started to read this book for my book club, I was really interested. This story is about a girl named Alyssa, who just found out her baby sister was born dead. Her mother becomes depressed, and they move to a new apartment. Soon her father moves away, and Alyssa starts calling herself Blister. She starts a new school, and no one can ignore her. This book would be good for you if you can stand sad things, because this book is really sad. But I know that almost every girl would love it!

Great Poems for all Ages

I'm sure you've all heard of Shel Silverstein. If you haven't, here's some information. He's a poet. He writes REALLY funny poems for kids of all ages! He wrote this really good book of poems, called Runny Babbit. In these poems, Silverstein mixes up the first letters of two words that go together. For example, the main character's named Runny Babbit (Bunny Rabbit). Also, raw carrot would be caw rarrot. Chicken pox would be picken chox, and so on. It's a really great book for kids who like to make up funny jokes. It's also good for reading aloud to toddlers, and younger kids learning how to read. It's fun to mix up words. Trust me, this is a great book for everyone, no matter how old you are!

Sisters Grimm: A Fairytale Adventure

The Sisters Grimm is a great book to read if you like very adventurous, fiction books where kids take action. It's good for boys and girls, even though it's mostly about two girls. The girls parents disappear, and they have to live with their grandmother, who they thought was dead! It's a very exciting book. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down! You guys HAVE to read it, it's so good!

Jacqueline Wilson

Jacqueline Wilson is a REALLY good author. She writes books for girls. She's a British author, so not a lot of her books are published in America. Some of my favorites are Best Friends, Double act, Candyfloss, Bad girls and The Worry Website. If you like books that are really dramatic, and not to adventurous, you should consider reading some of her books. Best Friends and Double Act haven't been published here yet. I can't wait until they are!

You can join the Jacqueline Wilson fan club here.
